Monterey is an area steeped in history that is today a wonderful place to live and offers a wonderful quality of life. With its temperate climate, cultural and community events, restaurants, beaches, and art scene, Monterey is a great place to live full time, own a vacation home, or spend some time exploring on a California coastal vacation. Monterey was originally known for its fishing and agriculture but the fishing industry slowed down in the mid-20th century due to overfishing. There are some fisherman’s cabins still preserved along Cannery Row for sightseers. Monterey’s history as an artist colony still thrives today and many painters and writers have come from the area or were highly influenced by the area including John Steinbeck, Henry Miller, and Robert Louis Stevenson. Other popular points of interest in Monterey are the Monterey Bay Aquarium and Cannery Row or the more adventurous will enjoy a myriad of outdoor activities including kayaking, whale watching, hang gliding, and hiking along the ocean or in the outskirts in one of the many nearby state and national wildlife preserves.
